Calgary
Hays MLA Art Johnston's
Report To Constituents
June 2008
The development of the Douglasdale entrance feature has been pushed back due to a delay by Enmax in starting the power relocates. Shane Duval of Calgary Region has informed me that the delay would only be a few weeks beyond the expected May deadline and the entrance feature should be completed by the time you all read this.
A representative of my office was in attendance at the DouglasdaleGlen Community Association AGM a few weeks ago. I’d like to thank everyone who attended to deal with the community’s issues.
I’d like to welcome our new step student Brieann Woods who will be working with Donna in the constituency office this summer.
I’m pleased to be able to tell you that Calgary Transit service in Auburn Bay will start on Tuesday September, 2008. The exact schedule is not known yet but the service will be available during morning and afternoon peak hours throughout the week. Complete information on the transit service should be available towards the middle of August.
I will be attending the DouglasdaleGlen Family Barbeque on June 7th between 3:00pm and 7:00pm being held by the DouglasdaleGlen Community Association. This will be a great time for the whole family with good food for all and a castle maze, pony rides, clowns, face painting and balloons for children and the young at heart. I look forward to seeing you there.
There were 31 new members of the Legislature when it sat this spring for the first time since the election and a sizable increase in the number of Calgary MLAs who were appointed to Cabinet. On April 15th the Honourable Norman Kwong, C.M. A.O.E., Lieutenant Governor of Alberta delivered the Speech from the Throne. Copies of the speech are available for pick up at my constituency office.
Because of the rapid growth we are experiencing in Alberta, and particularly in Calgary, a new area code is now required. As of September 8th 587 will join 403 and 780 as an Alberta area code. Also, of that date you will need to dial 10 digits, including the area code, to make local and long distance calls in Alberta. Your current phone numbers will not change as only new phone numbers will get the new area code. Emergency or information calls such as 911 and 411 will not be affected. Albertans can still continue to use the seven-digit toll-free government access number 310-000.
Are you a student looking for a summer job? How about a high school transcript or a student loan? The Government of Alberta provides a wide array of programs and resources for students. For more information visit www.services.gov.ab.ca/students.
Last month I was in Halifax attending the opening and closing ceremonies of the Senior International Ice Hockey Federation. While I was there I also met with several government officials regarding the pending cell phone legislation I am working on as well as the Safe Communities and Neighbourhoods Act and cruelty to animals legislation. My meetings with the Attorney General, police and government representatives were very informative and provided valuable expertise that will be useful in these areas.
On May 16th I was pleased to take part in the Alberta College of Art and Design’s Convocation Ceremony by handing out diplomas to the graduates. I wish them well in their future endeavours.
