Calgary Hays MLA Art Johnston's
Report To Constituents

January 2008

I’d like to thank everyone who joined us at our Christmas open house in December. I was pleased to see so many of you come out and celebrate the season and meet other residents of Calgary Hays.

As an update on the work I am doing in the legislature on your behalf I am involved in the creation and development of several Bills that are and will be before the house. These include:

  • Bills 1, 2 and 3 The Lobbyists Act which among other things will establish a lobbyists registry
  • Bill 52 which will introduce corrections to the Miscellaneous Statutes Amendment Act passed in 2005
  • Bill 212 The Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods Act is now in third reading
  • Bill 207 is part of The Traffic Safety Amendment Act which will eliminate the use of handheld communication devices while driving
  • Bill 49 is part of The Traffic Safety Amendment Act which will allow changes to the Alberta Traffic Safety Plan

I will provide you with further updates on these Bills in the months ahead.

As I’m sure most of you are aware the province-wide ban on smoking in all public places and workplaces came into effect on January 1st, 2008. The Tobacco Reduction Act will also prohibit smoking within a specified distance form the windows, doorways and air intakes of public places to protect indoor air quality.

The Southwest ring road has run into another delay as a result of the late arrival of the appraisal of two square kilometres of T’suu T’ina land needed to build the ring road. While unfortunate the government feels that the time must be taken now to ensure solid planning and firm agreements are put in place to prevent issues with the road in the future.

The Calgary Health Region issued its annual report to the community in December at the Roundup Centre which my staff attended. The report makes an important point about each of us becoming an active participant in our own health and well-being. The benefits of this to the quality of our lives particularly as we grow older are tangible in many ways, amongst them it reduces the chance of getting a chronic condition. Please consider making a healthier lifestyle a resolution for 2008.

The schedule for the upgrading of the Deerfoot Trail/Glenmore Trail Interchange has been announced. The Functional Planning Study is now completed and a Request for Proposals for the design of the Stage 1 improvements will be issued early this year. The design will be selected in early 2009 with construction to start in late 2009 or early 2010.

The government of Alberta is asking for your assistance regarding the re-designing of a new automobile license plate. The final decision will use as much input from Albertans as possible while meeting the needs of law enforcement and public safety. To share your ideas on Alberta’s next license plate, please visit www.licenseplate.alberta.ca. The consultation will continue until January 31st.

I appreciate the input I receive from you and welcome any comments you may have. Please contact myself or Donna Elms at the constituency office at 215-4380, calgary.hays@assembly.ab.ca. Please include your name, address and phone number so we can respond to your inquiry. Information is also available at www.assembly.ab.ca.
